Labuschagne Left Out from Australia's ODI Team Versus Team India
Marnus Labuschagne has been dropped from the three-game ODI series facing India, with in-form Queensland teammate Matt Renshaw getting a surprise inclusion.
Recent Form Lead to Omission
The right-hander was left out from the ODI squad after managing only a single run in his two batting efforts during the recent series against South Africa in August. He has a top score of 47 in his last 10 ODI batting appearances.
The 31-year-old has featured in 68 ODIs and amassed 1,871 runs at an batting average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now work towards a Test team comeback ahead of the Ashes beginning in Perth on 21 November.
Renshaw's Return and Other Squad Updates
There have been indications of a improvement in form with 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw made a hundred for the Bulls in the identical match against Tasmania.
Renshaw is in line to make his white-ball international debut in the forthcoming series against India after his last inclusion in an ODI squad in 2022.
Renshaw has played 14 Test matches with the most recent appearance in India in 2023 but is also seeking a red-ball recall as Australia seek a solution to their top-order woes.
Pace Returns and Injury News
Fast bowler Mitchell Starc makes a comeback for the ODI series against India after being rested since performing well for Australia in the clean sweep of West Indies in July.
Big Bash star Mitch Owen could make his ODI debut after suffering a concussion in the lead up to Australia’s last 50-over series against South Africa.
ODI captain Pat Cummins continues to be absent as he works to regain fitness from a spinal issue by the time to captain Australia in the first Ashes Test in November.
Squad Selection Approach and Schedule
Australia have named a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the Ashes on the horizon, although Glenn Maxwell will sit out the five-game T20 series due to a wrist problem suffered in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will lead both the ODI and T20 sides after scoring a hundred in the final game against New Zealand to clinch a two-nil victory last week.
“We have named a squad for the ODI series and initial two matches of the T20 series as there will be player management through the back end of the series as individuals prepare for the cricket season through domestic first-class matches,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The majority of the T20 squad will remain together as it’s an important period in the preparation for the T20 World Cup next year, however we are aiming to find equilibrium to ensure we simultaneously get ready certain individuals for the Test matches ahead.”
Australia’s three-match ODI series against India begins on October 19 in Perth, before the rivals play five T20 internationals from 29 October.
