Substantial Online Failure Hits Numerous Online Platforms and Mobile Apps
A widespread web disruption has affected numerous sites and apps worldwide, as users reporting troubles accessing the internet after problems at Amazon’s web hosting system.
The affected services include Snapchat, Roblox, Signal, and Duolingo, as well as multiple Amazon-owned services like its main retail platform and the Ring security doorbell company.
In the UK, the financial institution Lloyds was affected in addition to its branches Halifax and the Scottish bank, and also reports of issues accessing the HM Revenue and Customs online portal on the start of the week. Furthermore across the UK, many Ring users took to social media to report their home gadgets were failing.
In the UK alone, notifications of disruptions on specific apps reached the thousands for each app.
Amazon reported that the outage started in the east coast of the United States at the cloud division, a section that supplies essential internet framework for numerous businesses, who utilize capacity on Amazon servers. The cloud platform is the biggest global cloud computing service.
Shortly after midnight (PDT) in the United States (8am BST), Amazon confirmed “increased failure rates and slowdowns” for the cloud services in a zone on the east coast of the United States. The cascading impact appeared to hit platforms around the world, with the outage tracking website showing issues with the corresponding services in different parts of the world.
Cisco’s Thousand Eyes, a tool that reports on internet outages, further indicated a rise in problems on that morning, and numerous instances found in Virginia, the site of Amazon’s US-East-1 region where officials confirmed the issues started.
