TikTok Influencers Fueling Parallel Trade for Unlicensed Weight-Loss Drug
A shadow market for unlicensed weight-loss drugs is propelled by TikTok fitness influencers and sellers on messaging platforms, based on recent findings.
Experimental Drug Acquiring Traction Via Social Media
The experimental drug, which remains in clinical trials, is being advertised by online personalities for its supposed fat-burning properties. Viewers are encouraged to contact these accounts directly for supplier links, while also receiving promotional offers.
Active Trade on Social Networks
Separately, a robust trade exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of members share comparison images, injection guides and claims of rapid UK delivery. Vendors market the drug there before directing customers to other platforms for purchases.
Learning About Retatrutide
Retatrutide is an investigational injectable developed by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The treatment affects three gut hormones – GLP-1, GIP and pancreatic hormone. Early trials indicate it could help patients reduce up to 25% of their total weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted online as the successor to Ozempic.
Healthcare Professionals Voice Concerns
Nevertheless, physicians and pharmacists have warned that the sale of what is still an unapproved drug in the UK is a cause for concern and could lead to individuals administering products of unknown origin.
Several professionals said the popularity for the experimental drug could be connected to the increasing cost of licensed weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.
Legal Status and Enforcement
Marketing retatrutide on social media or Telegram is prohibited in the United Kingdom, as it is an unlicensed medication that cannot be promoted or distributed for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.
Some influencers try to circumvent the regulations by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted substance, but promotion and supply can still violate medicines, marketing, and consumer regulations, potentially leading to fines, legal action or prison.
Platform Response and Content Removal
According to the social media company, the service has taken down violative content and banned associated keywords and search suggestions. The organization stated it was dedicated to maintaining the platform safe and investing in strengthening compliance measures.
Digital Marketplace Operations
Investigations also found groups with up to nine thousand members selling the experimental drug using the platform's built-in discovery tool, which operates like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” immediately displays channels with thousands of users, filled with photos of slimming results, positive testimonials and detailed instructions for mixing or administering at home.
After moments of entering one community, a vendor shared WhatsApp details, where most purchases occur. The vendor sent an instruction manual and guaranteed delivery within two days. When questioned whether the product was genuine, one seller said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a image of a supposed testing documentation. Not one inquired about weight, medical conditions or previous experience.
Item Details and Pricing
Inside these communities, messages show dark colored packages with postal service labels, stating to include fresh supplies. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Buyers can choose between dry substance containers, mixed at residence with purified liquid, or ready-to-use injectors usually priced at £160 for 20 milligrams. When questioned how long a injector should be used, sellers give conflicting responses ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.
Platform Moderation and Safety Actions
A representative for Telegram stated it actively moderated dangerous material on its service including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Healthcare Expert Warnings
“Individuals are injecting substances they cannot confirm. Although the science behind this drug is sound, these online versions may not contain what they advertise,” stated a pharmacy expert, the head of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.
A medical professional of an online medical service connected the increase in demand to current cost increases for approved slimming drugs such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, individuals are using online platforms. But counterfeit treatments are extremely risky. You can’t be certain what’s inside or whether the environment they were produced in was clean,” she explained.
Her staff has previously encountered patients harmed by self-injection from unverified suppliers. “We understand the disappointment, but buying from messaging apps or communication platforms is taking chances with your health,” said the doctor. “These substances could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”
Producer Position
A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company stated retatrutide was in phase 3 research studies and had not been evaluated or authorized by any government authority anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this point no one can sell [it] for personal consumption,” they said, noting that any product “falsely representing itself as a company experimental substance not yet authorized … may subject patients to potentially serious health risks”.
