When Swimmers Ran From Danger, Popular Picture Captures Lifeguard Sprinting ‘All Out’ To the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as resident of Bondi, describes the famous beach as her back yard. On that particular weekend evening, she, along with numerous neighbors, detected pops echoing across the neighbourhood.

“We all thought the same, but I thought it was still too bright and there was nothing visible,” Ching states. Stepping out of her home, she witnessed people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The faces on display signaled a crisis was unfolding.

While standing on the avenue, conversing with a pair who had hurried up the incline soaked, she heard someone moving up behind her. It was a lifeguard, sprinting to Bondi barefoot from the nearby Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while holding a defibrillator.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and as I turned I just saw this streak in blue,” she recalls. “He was zooming past. It was just him running in the direction that the crowd was trying to escape from, and hauling that large equipment and unshod … He’s running at something that surely every part of you would instruct you to go in the opposite direction.

“Just no hesitation, but just completely maximum effort sprinting.”

A Symbol of Heroism In the Wake of Tragedy

The photo Ching captured of the lifeguard, now known to be Jackson Doolan, quickly spread as a prime example of moments of heroism in the aftermath of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, another lifeguard, says that Doolan, called “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to support the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to aid emergency personnel, police and medical teams treating many the injured.

Collective Reaction and Support

Doolan’s account was just one of many to emerge from the community, with the patrol base beside the location of the incident serving as a makeshift hospital. Reports indicate that fellow lifeguards were also seen taking action, such as going into the ocean to rescue people needing help.

After the tragedy, comments of appreciation flooded in. An online statement shared thanks for the lifeguards who demonstrated that “goodness will always conquer hatred”.

The team of lifeguards published a message, noting they were “still trying to comprehend what happened”.

“Thank you all for your thoughtful messages and solidarity. We are overwhelmed by the kindness shown towards our responders,” the team commented. “In time, we will recount our experiences in the belief that it helps those involved.”

Local Government Commendation

Waverley council, the administrative organization that employs many permanent beach safety officers, said that the crew performed exceptionally from the moment the shooting started through to late that evening.

“People have shared so many moving stories, but the popular image of Jackson Doolan, sprinting from Tamarama to Bondi with a medical device so he could help save lives is remarkable,” stated a council representative.

“Our lifeguards exhibit selflessness every day in keeping our iconic beaches safe for the public, but what we witnessed on Sunday should be celebrated.

“During this time of sorrow and come to terms with the terror of this brutal and barbaric act of violence, I think it is important that we focus on just how much good we have seen in the face of such evil.”
